Taking classes in both history and Italian language, students will gain an understanding of the historical periods of the Late Middle Ages 和 Renaissance while experiencing in person the tangible traces this history has left on modern 意大利. 探索博物馆, architecture and historical sites of north-central 意大利, students will learn conversational Italian while seeing how modern 意大利 has been shaped by the past.

Students will fly to Rome and travel together to Siena, the program's home base two-and-a-half hours away. 与一个 small, walkable city center designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Siena is the ideal location to learn about the history of the region. Home to the oldest bank in the world, 蒙特·德·帕斯基, numerous important Renaissance painters’ studios, 和 锡耶纳大学, one of the oldest universities in the world, Siena is also boasts to sites such as the Torre del Mangia 和 museum of Santa Maria della Scala, 曾经是一家医院.
Frequent daytrips to nearby towns and cities include Florence, 意大利艺术中心, 文化, and fashion 和 birthplace for the Renaissance, 还有比萨, 圣Gimignano, 卢卡, 和利沃诺. Students will have opportunities to socialize and practice their Italian with peers from the 锡耶纳大学 while taking in the sweep of Italian history.

There are no course or language prerequisites. Students with no prior knowledge of Italian are welcome to attend, as are students at an advanced language level. The language class will be adapted to each student’s needs.
The courses will consist of four weeks of in-person classes on campus during Summer I, plus the three-week study abroad experience. The travel is a required component, and students who cannot or do not plan to travel will not be permitted to enroll.

In Siena, students will live together in shared rooms in the 伊特鲁里亚短笛旅馆, a comfortable hotel in a historic building one block from the Piazza del Campo in the center of Siena.
Breakfast is provided at the hotel each morning. The program cost will include welcome and farewell dinners. Most other meals are students' responsibility.
